Creating our own shared spaces
Anamika · 2024-02-15 15:21
It is nigh impossible to find a late night communal space in my municipality, which isn't dedicated to, or skewing it's business toward, degenerate drinking. Given the unique challenges faced by my own, homeless and nigger infested wasteland of a city, it's not surprising to find that all the 24 hour cafes have been strangled out of business by the nigger-loving, yet paradoxically, nigger-intolerant, community.
So say we eschew the public entirely: what's to stop me and a band of merry men from splitting the cost of a 1000+ sqft. commercial space? Given 20 Lains and the average cost of renting commercial estate in my area, costs come out to about $200 per month, per person. normal people gladly pay that much for mind-numbing intoxicants and boutique gyms, so for the right person, the ability to have equitable control over the physical embodiment and culture of the establishment they most frequent, would seem a fair return on investment.
I know zoning laws and other such trickery will limit what can ultimately be done with such a space; but surely my humble dream of a cyber cafe, where everyone brings their own unique hardware and networks it together, could operate within the prevailing legal landscape, no? I figure there must be some pretty high barriers to entry, unrelated to expenses, that I'm not considering, otherwise I don't see why these kinds of shared spaces wouldn't be more prevalent.

are you aware of the concept of hacker/maker spaces?
this sounds kinda like one of those. if not then whats the difference ?

I think the problem is one of dilution. What kind of people are you interested in gathering with? I would assume other technically minded people, who on the other hand are not javashit brogrammers. How many actually like minded people are in your city? I supposed a fair share of them, now find them. Teh great majority of them may not come out due to the simple fact that outside it's full of degenerate drinking cattle, and they have already found one or other online community where they feel at home anyway, and yes, there is no hackerspace available for them there. It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation, but how to remedy that? If you don't have a nice and decent space to hang they won't have any reason to come, but to get that space you need to have the money, and, as you said, enough people to pool the resources to pull this off.
Gyms are hyper-popular, and so are pubs. Hacker spaces not so much. Most people seem to like the noise of the crowd and distaseful music, not a cozy environment for learning and tinkering.
But if you think these kind of obstacles are worth attacking and that you may be able to gather the resources to actually do this, by all means do, we need more, not less, hackerspaces.

I would love to join such a physical place. However, I'm in much smaller area of around 13k population. All of the empty buildings here have been gutted out by homeless and scrapers trying to make a quick buck.
Crazy Jake · 2024-02-17 13:50
it can work but the landscape for warehouse dwelling has changed drastically since that fire in oakland some years ago, they used that as a precident to crack down on artists collaborating under the guise of muh fire hazard, so gl trying to rent (and buying the building gonna cost like 200k minimum)
also i think cyber cafes are going the way of arcades... you're supposed to do everything at home
Shogun · 2024-02-28 14:01
Nice crib, OP. But you don't need an entire warehouse. You can probably just rent some office space. Like a room or two which is fairly affordable just for you and a hand full of buddies. One hacker space I knew did just that. The bathrooms and kitchen are usually shared in those with other offices on the same floor. Then you can pool together funds for a proper soldering station and other shared hardware, tools and components.
But back to that workshop you posted. I hope I can have something like that soon but it's not gonna be anywhere near a city for multitudes of reasons. Not completely in the sticks but people would pretty much have to come over night. I wonder, would a space like that be viable too for that purpose?

Just rent or buy a club house with friends if you have any and turn them into whatever you want.
If you want to be extra edgy, form a sekrit society with your online friends and then buy many club houses. Perhaps call it The mystical order of Lainists with ponies
Bonus points if you form a cult and claim religious tax exemption.
The rational solution is just form a company that does nothing and makes no money, which would allow everyone to have an equal stake in the property and prevent soykaf slinging in a court of law when someone gets butt hurt that nobody wants to turn the space into a community sex dungeon.

Have you ever tied to collect $200 from a single Lainchaner? Much less 20, consistently for the term of your lease.
Delilah · 2024-09-23 22:56
>unironically uses the word "nigger-loving"
Not interested in talking to you.
I have thought of this though, and I've thought of a business that could just be called "Third Space". Basically it would be a large area with plenty of space to sit around and chat, as well as quiet areas to study, make stuff, etc.
Could have some drinks, food, etc. but explicitly NOT require purchase to spend some time there. I think you could make sure you make rent every month with a sort of ticket system: pay for as many tickets as you want, but you need a ticket (costing maybe $1/hour? Depends on how much rent is and what the capacity of the building is) to enter, and if there aren't enough tickets, then tough toenails, you can't come in.

Sigh…

Do you really need to be told why this is financially speaking a bad idea? 1000 square ft is too large and with your rancid imageboarder brain nobody is gonna hang out with you and foot the bill at the same time. There’s a reason you spend your time online. Irl people don’t want to hang out with attention seeking assholes with the mental age of a 12 year old, let alone pay for his dumb fantasies of owning a warehouse.
> my humble dream of a cyber cafe, where everyone brings their own unique hardware and networks it together
So just open a regular cafe you pinhead. No need for a massive commercial space if all you want is a cafe or a hacker space and it’s probably cheaper too once you factor in operating costs and profits.

You can but if you don't do that with people you already know and in who you can trust, it's going to fail.
5 guys will listen to loud music, keeping soykaf clean will be everyone's problem which mean it will be no one's problem, one of the guy will invite strangers all the time...
And things will go missing.
And one or two guy will loose their income and won't be capable to pay.
In short, soykaf happen.
The entry right should be to have proven your honesty and your self dicipline.

I started a discord server to try and gather up enough of a community to start one of these spaces. But only kids joined and I cannot wait long enough for them to grow up so my idea died after 6 months of trying. I couldn't find a way to make it financially feasible without the city already having an established hacker/maker culture.

do you have friends in your area ? go rent a cheap as soykaf business warehouse and put all your tools in it. Advertise at the local uni, invite your friends, do cool projects.

I have friends but they dont share my interests in diy and making things. The reason I didn't rent a space before finding a community is because the cheapest space I could find was the same price as my rent per week and I didn't feel like spending $15000 on something that would likely fail. I should advertise my projects more because some are cool maybe I could get some uni students interested. I made a chicken coop for the chooks that free range in my yard. I'm working out the kinks on the automation. Basically opening and closing the hatch and using noises to tell the chickens it's time to go inside/outside. It works so well except one chicken is really dumb and always gets trapped outside and I have to let her in.

Mind sharing a link to the server? Kinda offtopic, but looking for likeminded adults to build up a decent online community for an mc server and other tech projects.

I've never had an issue finding spaces like this regardless of where I am, but I can see why you might be having trouble
