Piratebox Thread
Agent Jones · 2018-02-12 22:22
Hello chummers. I decided to start a PirateBox and I need your help to fill it up.
The hardware I'm using is a tplink wireless router with a 32gb drive.
The current contents are a bunch of programming and electronics books and a few others like "Steal" this book.
What would you want to see on this thing/what would you want to add to it?
Hagbard Celine · 2018-02-13 11:36
Relevant
Dozer · 2018-02-14 06:14
You could add some music, too
Besides that, are people connecting to it? I tried running around with one, but with no scifi cry after two weeks I just gave up

I didn't take it out yet. I'll start carrying it around college and the local hackerspace soon.
The place I want it to get the most traction is a tech conference that's coming up soon.

That's a better audience for sure

Jet Black · 2018-02-14 19:05
>>1072
nothing wrong with anarchism itself, but these "how to make your own molotov cocktail" books are stupid and misrepresent anarchism
HELIOS · 2018-02-14 19:09
>>1073
The problem doesn't stop there either. The recipes in the "cookbook" for example have a history of harming the people who try them and so it's assumed that the book is a form of counter-intelligence.
BloodCat · 2018-02-14 22:10

>>1073
The original author of the anarchist cookbook said he did it when he was an edgy teenager and basically plagiarized a bunch of military tech manuals on improvised weapons, admitting that he had no idea what he was writing about, and the entire thing was a "fuarrrk the man" attitude.
Then in his 20s, he sold the rights to the book for cash, not realizing the implication
later in his life, him writing those books haunted him, and even though he he was the author, there was nothing he could do to have the books not be published (or sold on amazon for that matter) after he begged and pleaded for people to stop selling the book
H.R. Giger · 2018-02-15 16:21

And where in these two books I posted are the molotovs?
No, really, point me to the bomb recipes, I'm having trouble finding them.
Nell · 2018-02-16 13:26
Update!
Had it with me today around college, got some friends to join, a few even uploaded some files, this went better than expected honestly

I would say all went right that way, the book introduced me to the knowledge that no power cannot be overthrown and should be read by everyone

And I'm going to ask again, where in the two books I posted does it advocate terrorism?

Since this is causing some confusion, note that this 'Anarchist Cookbook' is not the same as the original, and is from a pacifist perspective.

the problem with these is nobody is going to trust connecting to one.
if you have an office or neighborhood or a bunch of roommates that know and trust you then it could be a really cool device since you can put files on it and run image board software.
Haruyoshi · 2020-03-22 19:43

Fill it with useful books, documentation, perhaps some media you are personally fond of.
Another idea could be to make a private network of them that only you and some people who are smart enough to access them can use. It could be fun while it lasts.

I built a piratebox a year ago and took it to the main train station of the next big city from my hometown. It can run on a battery pack for 12+ hours, so I hid it in the morning and picked it up in the evening. Thousands of people pass and wait there every day, but during the whole day there wasn't a single connection. Unless you're putting it somewhere you know technically minded people hand out, there won't be anyone connecting. Ever.
Lunch · 2020-05-22 10:42
>>4508
People usually need real Internet connection, i.e. station's free wifi in such places to find directions, timetables, watch some googlevision, they won't be looking for your access point at all.
But! If you make the captive webpage with working https certificate, put it in place where youth goes to goof out, and also give this thing some advertising in form of QR stickers or graffiti, there's a good chance people would visit it. Publish it's location on technology message boards, deaddrops.com. Electronics miniaturize so fast that it's possible to put a whole web server inside an LED light bulb, and have it working for free in some hallway or public building's porch.

Screenshot the text editor, or add txt file. Don't use 4chanspeak or whatever the blocking page says.

You're probably triggering the word filter by using certain words, replacing all instances of memespeak with normal words should generally work.

I've been running pirate box with 2x 16TB drives. It's great. No need to torrent anything, and you can download stuff over HTTPS or SFTP. Friends love it. Currently only problem is the box which doesn't fit more than two drives. I've been considering adding extra drives using external USB-SATA3 adapters, but that kind of is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Networking is handled using unlimited 1Gbit/s connection.

Do you manually copy stuff over from your PC or do you have it pull torrents from an RSS feed when its on your network or something?
>2x 16TB
Damn, and you filled those up?

Now we've got idiots who completely miss point, premise and content of all threads they post in. Is this the death of chans? Are those posters actually poorly configured markov bots? Because it's not the first time I see such answers on lainchan that address one keyword in thread topic or respond something irrelevant to an unrelated image.
Here's another example. Two, I repeat - two posters answer completely irrelevant opposite stuff just because their neural networks (artificial or natural - can't tell at this point) decode OP post picture as an image of a cell phone: >>>/Ω/27970

I recently read that the piratebox project will no longer continue and that downloads will no longer be available later this year. What alternatives are there?

Install OpenWRT and all needed software yourself. Piratebox is OpenWRT "distribution" with Kareha and FTP server preinstalled.

Look for people with particular hardware you're interested, and ask in according forum topics. Devices of particular interest are Zsun Wireless Card reader and A5-V11 router, due to their extremely small sizes have highers hacker community beside regular home routers at OpenWRT forum.

Jesus, does that actually work?
I feel like the ZSUN itself would not be powerful enough to draw enough electricity for that kind of antenna.
But if you can tell me that actually works then I will buy a ZSUN right now, because the only thing keeping me from buying it was it's limited range.

I'd just add my all my files if I understand the point of the boxes. They are modest in size but include 800ish books, 200ish video game console roms, windows emulators for the roms, a couple of x86 linux distros including lubuntu and lakka, 20 manga series, reaction images, all taking up not much space. Not very many psx, that's why it's not much.
>16gb for psx isos/roms/games, like 20 games
>2gb (or was if 4gb?) for nes/snes/gb/gbc/gba/n64, like 200 games
>a few gb of reaction images, thousands of images
>2gb or so for linux distros, two 64 bit ones (lakka is soykaf for 32bit is why)
>half a gif for the text files of books, the 800ish
>48gb for manga, 20 series
>collection of apk's for android, 400 mb, 30 applications, lib folder shows many are for more than one architecture
>also modest applications saved for windows including emulators, 7-zip, handbreak, etcher, partition wizard, opengl/directx/etc updates, etc, win98, a driver for win98's usb, etc
One could download it all pretty fast. It's all under 64 gb though. Most backups of my files don't include all psx games nor any manga nor linux distros nor win9x nor apps for win9x and are under 16 gb when only the books, library folder, apk's, and roms.
I'd like to have more manga and far more psx titles and about 50 tv shows but that'd take a lot of sd's for this mobile craving neet. I fear the homelessness.
I think a 'starter' collection of files and applications or even distros would be ideal for some random hidden pirate box in a wall or attic or something in public for cons and such to re-start their lives upon freedom. Eventually it'll have to be passed on that way anyway as the Internet is more and more controlled. If no one does this then people will literally sell stuff at flea markets illegally and that'd be such drama due to entrapment, sting operations, though back in the day and possibly still now people did do that, at least in the USA, selling things illegally software wise. Very Matrix. Having some wifi broadcasting pirate box hidden inside random walls would be nice. I wonder if non-USA does this sort of thing often? I thought I read they did.
t. not op but felt like saving the old thread as this comment here >>3771 of which was likely the OP depressed me
