Abandoned Building Lab

I live in an American city that is essentially a warzone, lots of gang violence/social unrest and political corruption, but with lots of abandoned old buildings and failing city services. Has anyone ever tried to secretly squat in an abandoned industrial building? I wouldn't be living there full time, but I would set up a small arrangement. I would clean out the debris from an area, scavenge materials from other nearby abandoned buildings and fix it up, try to hook up power and collect rain water. Maybe set up a lab with a computer and 3D printer, grow a food or cannabis garden, set up a composting toilet, maybe a meal worm farm too. As for security, I think the best I could do would just to build up the physical security and set up some cameras to monitor the area. Anyone have any experience or insight with stuff like this?

>>10236 Wouldn't the main problem security-wise be that, as you are there illegally and by yourself, it can be presumed that crimes against you will not be punished, and therefore you are fair game? I think this is supposed to be the main reason homelessness is so dangerous, everyone knows you do not have a hierarchy of violence behind you and that you are vulnerable.

>>10236 Whatever you build will be readily stolen and destroyed, not worth the effort, also the last thing you want is to be caught in an abandoned building with a maniac.

>>10236 What practical use is developing an abandoned building unless you're doing something illegal and profitable? Especially if you already have a place to live. I don't have any experience with this, and it's a compelling idea, but I can't help but think this is larp. Practicality is the question I keep coming back to when considering this, as much as I do enjoy entertaining how to secure an abandoned building - like the secret base we all imagined as children. From a practical standpoint, I don't think you have to worry so much about maniacs - unless the people in your city tend to stab as a first reaction.

if you're really desperate it might be safer and more comfortable than sleeping on a bench only to get asked by a cop to move and then finding another bench to sleep on and repeat the process until you have enough energy to not get harassed by 12. one of my best friends used to be homeless, and he would sleep in this abandoned church. it was a popular spot for edgy teens and pot heads; the whole place was trashed and there was spraypaint everywhere and all the windows were smashed. we would go there to smoke sometimes. one time we got so crossfaded we couldn't move and we both passed out there for the night. no one ever got hurt or harassed. we did something kinda stupid there that I don't wanna go into detail about cause paranoia but it got signs posted around it saying anyone who trespasses would get arrested or something like that so we stopped going, but it was fun while it lasted.

This is a fiction trope. Real life will never ever be interesting
