Self published physical Zine

Hitomi · 2023-03-14 10:47
I have been wanting to make a zine about hacking and cyberpunk culture for a quite long time. Nothing to fancy or complicated, 20 A5 pages in black and white. Motivation: Lately I been feeling that the new generations are more "computer-stupid" than us or even previous generations even when they are with a computer in their pockets all of the time. I want to make something that can peak their interest into hacker/cyberpunk culture or at least try to. It would be sad to see this cultures die in my hometown with my generation. Target: Students around 16-18 yo Contents: This is what I have thought for the first issue (please let me know if you find something boring or think of another thing that would pick their interests better): - "The Shell will make you free" (a one page manifesto on why it is it worth to become a hacker or learn about this things) - "Free music" (to show how to use youtube-dl, and why culture shouldn't have a price to consume it) - "DeepWeb 101" (what is tor, how to install tor browser, best practices, recommended places) - "Hacking 101: Recon" (grabbing a real target and exposing all that should be done during a recon phase, the idea is to show all the other phases in the next's issues with real targets of companies/services in the city) - "Code of the month" (a small joke virus they can type and run in their computers or friend computers) -"Internet scavenger hunt" (something hidden in between the lines, something fairly easy) That's what I have thought but I am afraid it won't quite catch their interests. Any feedback will be appreciated.

would probably replace youtube-dl with soulseek for better quality. if ur specifically irritated about phones it might be worth having some phone ricing soykaf in there covering simple "topic 101" jumping-off points is def ur best choice here, including a wider range of topics means a higher chance hitting something ur reader is interested in. beyond getting em on the hook u can probs start feeding em into other resources to learn on their own def post it here if/when u finish, would love to check it out

+1! If you write this, please post a link here and I'll print some and distribute them where I live too

>>10038 Eh most of these topics get covered if they learn CS anyways. Also these seem really surface level. >how to use youtube-dl Just type "youtube-dl <url>" >how to install tor browser Just download and run the installer >best practices Just use the default settings And this one seems dumb >a small joke virus they can type and run in their computers or friend computers Windows defender will instantly delete whatever virus file you try to put on your computer. It would be more useful to actually teach about how p2p stuff like tor and bittorrent work rather than just how to be an enduser. Also learning about bittorrent is a lot more useful than learning about tor. it's completely useless to use tor if youre visiting any websites with login, which is most websites. and for visiting websites like lainchan it's also pointless, since you don't need to hide your ip from lainchan and you don't need to hide the fact you visit lainchan from your ISP.
Lunch · 2023-03-14 21:23
>>10041 >since you don't need to hide your ip from lainchan and you don't need to hide the fact you visit lainchan from your ISP. oh I didn't realize that. how come?
HELIOS · 2023-03-14 21:29
>>10042 >hide your ip from lainchan Why would you need to hide your IP from lainchan? I'm pretty sure they don't even look at most of the IPs that visit the site. >hide the fact you visit lainchan Your ISP isn't monitoring you and even if they were they wouldn't care that you visit some anime forum filled with completely legal content.
Unnamed · 2023-03-14 22:44
>>10043 how can I be certain about any of that?
Armitage · 2023-03-14 23:50
>>10041 >These [topics] seem surface level Indeed they are, I worry if I put something complex to start with, like how to hack the public transportation tickets for free rides, it is going to fail to carch their attention. Maybe it is true I made it a bit too much dumb proof, I dont know >Windows defender will instantly delete whatever virus You got to much faith in windows defender. In my experience if it is something new and not too obvious it has problems guessing it is a virus or not >>10039 Didn't think at all about phone ricing but it is a subject that might latch on. After all they spend more time in the phone than in the pc. >Soulseek Will look into that thanks! >>10040 It will be in my mother tongue but i guess i could do a translation, will keep that in mind!

>>10038 Your intentions are good right off the bat. But let's face it, the hacker and cyberpunk culture of the 90s and 2000s is pretty dead anyway. The reason is a lot of kids in your demographic (16-18 year olds) are a lot less suspicious of corpos and have bought into the cult of big tech consumer culture and the silicone valley propaganda. Beyond just tech skills, you need to get them out of that pacified mentality and get them to think critically. Be sure to include some cyberpunk lit, maybe an easy to access anime/manga and where and how to pirate it or maybe some fun tidbits of internet culture like how/why you should try retro gaming or something. Don't be too tech orientated, make sure there is variety to appeal to people with different tastes. A lot of people here are saying your going too basic, but many 16-18 year olds are even less tech savy than we were at that age so just giving them something basic that they can try out themselves is a good way of luring them in. I would add two things: >operation security and staying safe online Basic stuff like not giving away your information online, not signing into personal accounts while using tor, keeping multiple emails for personal life, work, and stuff online etc. a lot of kids don't seem to understand this stuff at all and blindly put their trust in tech corporations >python Add some basic beginner level programming material that's fun or at least weird and unusual enough to get them to have fun programming and learning the basic skills outside of annoy life draining STEM schooling they take
Haruyoshi · 2023-03-15 08:00
>>10045 Yes, but we are obviously not talking about sharing 0 days with random kids, are we? If you are using a known exploit it will detect it immediately.
Jane Doe · 2023-03-15 09:18
>>10049 Wouldn't that be fun and attention grabbing?
Zhora · 2023-03-15 10:36
>>10050 You know what, if you have a 0 day then by all means share it with random kids instead of using it to make tens of thousands of dollars. I forgot that most people on this site are just roleplayers.
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-03-15 12:22
>>10038 This is a great idea! Some sort of linux starter guide/cheat sheet would be cool, perhaps how to use virtualbox and install linux mint. Or maybe something more beginner friendly like programming theory and a python?
Nguoi La · 2023-03-15 12:23
OP here >>10049 >>10050 No one said nothing about an 0day. The "hack" is a problem with the infrastructure and how the system is set up. It can not be fixed without removing all the infrastructure which is expensive. >>10051 Plus, exchanging real power for money is a dumb move in my opinion. But anyway that isn't the point of this thread. >>10047 >the hacker and cyberpunk culture of the 90s and 2000s is pretty dead anyway I feel the same way, and I hate it. They did they propaganda and they won't while we waited without doing nothing. That's why I want to do this, to at least have my peace of mind, my "I tried it". Anyway >some basic beginner level programming material That would be cool indeed, probably some dumb AI now that is getting traction while displaying it's core concepts? That could be cool I think, what do you think? >operation security and staying safe online maybe exchange the DeepWeb 101 with this? Cool ideas thanks!
Koichiro · 2023-03-15 12:27
>>10053 Sounds cool, maybe the center page could be an infographic on how to install some linux distro it gets discarded as a flood, fuarrrk me for not responding on the same message I guess :(
Acid Burn · 2023-03-15 14:06
>>10039 >replace youtube-dl with soulseek for better quality True enough, but since OP mentioned youtube-dl it's also worth discussing how to find similar tools and sources (Slavart Divolt/Discord/Telegram, Spotiflyer for Spotify, Deemix for Deezer, etc.) should the ones listed ever go down. Teach them to fish, rather than hand them a fish, in a sense. >>10047 >basic beginner level programming material that's fun or at least weird and unusual Web scraping for a commonly used service could be a useful topic (getting times and prices for shows, getting 'live' updates on transportation via a lean, bloat-free portal, etc). >>10054 Operation security and staying safe online could be one article, depending on feedback, how you feel about the first issue of the zine, etc. DeepWeb 101 could always be a follow up article. Since your stated motivation is educating students, you could have some topics for the reader to look into beyond the zine, as a sort of "Further reading" section. All in all, definitely post it here if/when you finish it, seems very interesting.
Bob Arctor · 2023-03-15 14:43
>>10059 >Teach them to fish, rather than hand them a fish, in a sense. So some form of Shell 101/Linux starter guide?
Koos van der Merwe · 2023-03-15 17:29
>>10041 >learning about bittorrent is a lot more useful than learning about tor tor being on here is totally fine imo but def add bittorrent. lots of soykafty info out there about how to pirate, one page of good knowledge on piracy entry points is a great add >>10045 >hack the public transportation tickets for free rides obvs hacking is too complex for this zine but physical entry tricks could also be an interesting topic. lockpicking, avoiding cameras and looking suspicious. might be too far off-topic if we want this kept digital-only though
Shogun · 2023-03-16 10:44
>>10061 I agree, p2p stuff should be something to include, if someone could link or provide info on the stuff would be appreciated as my knowledge on torrenting is pretty basic, only use it for sec leaks
J.C. Denton · 2023-05-04 22:59
>>10038 OP I love your idea in a way, and think it's really neat. I don't know how old you are, I'm 19 and I know my generation well. I think you put too much faith in them to read zine articles, to be able to even stumble onto your zine in the first place. Almost every Gen-Z watches Youtube. It's nu-television. You'd have more actual success reaching people in that way, but it would undermine your message about independence, make you prone to censorship, and probably attract an audience who aren't really that dedicated. Your endeavour would be commendable, but probably fruitless.
Cereal Killer · 2023-05-05 11:01
>>10252 What about just leaving it on campuses, or providing pages which they can easily read together and discuss on their discord servers? >>10038 Maybe mention LibGen and trackers like MAM for saving on textbooks.
Dox · 2023-05-05 16:32
>>10252 Who cares if its fruitless? Just do it anyway! Keep the culture going. The hardest part is finding the right audience but don't be disheartened and keep pushing it anyway.
J.C. Denton · 2023-05-05 22:51
>>10252 dont think that's true, there's a popular zine at my university made each month and there's a zine club at my uni. Granted, the zine is soykaf and the zine club is even soykafter, but it goes go to show at least that young people aren't uninterested in physical media totally, in fact they're interested in this particular medium! What >>10255 said, you can leave it around unis and they'll stumble onto it there, then they can find it online (assuming its hosted online too) and share it across their social network. I understand your reservations but I think you are too pessimistic. >>10038 if you finish one I'll definitely print and distribute some copies at my campus. I'd be willing to help with editing or maybe even writing a couple pieces if you want as well. My email is lainon8080@proton.me

>>10043 >Your ISP isn't monitoring you ISPs in my country has to keep logs and also allow glowies to monitor their network.
Hitomi · 2023-05-06 02:37
>Target: >Students around 16-18 yo So, people who've never seen >the hacker and cyberpunk culture of the 90s and 2000s The only way to solve that contradiction is to embrace it, to see it as "the fanzine that wants to show the hacker and cyberpunk culture of the 90s and 2000s to people who weren't born yet, or were 5" and making it a selling point, as in being self-aware of that and making it fun or interesting somehow. Overdo it, like retrowave music makes the 80's cool by taking it over the top and being meta about it. If you want an example of self-aware humor that doesn't take itself too seriously and there's tech involved, check out this guy's channel https://yewtu.be/channel/UCtHaxi4GTYDpJgMSGy7AeSw And maybe you could have a youtube channel for the zine where you publish ads for it and video versions of some of its youtube-friendly articles. You could even publish videos to tiktok saying "fuarrrk tiktok, we're making industrial EDM on the command line over here at the LAINONzine" or something like that.
Drifter · 2023-05-18 09:41
>Students around 16-18 yo >people who've never seen I don't think so after Lain hyped in tiktok.

Roy Batty · 2023-05-26 11:10
>>10323 I talked with my own mouths with a group of 15-17yo z00m3rs, who are damn sel-fans, listening to Jun Togawa and so on. Ok, they mostly aren't much in cyberpunk, but cyberpunk geeks there are too.
HELIOS · 2023-05-26 12:35
>>10322 >Lain hyped in tiktok. This is depressing, it's not fun to see shows that I care about being desecrated and soykafted on so easily.
Dr. X · 2023-05-29 03:45
>>10371 Lain really isn't as hyped on tiktok (or anywhere) as you seem to think it is. Quit being such a gate-keeping NEET.
Zero Cool · 2023-06-08 02:38
>>10371 So long as they watch the show and start thinking about it's ideas, who gives a soykaf where they found out about it? We should start hyping Cypherpunk stuff on there too, raise a generation of fastlet anti-establishment cryptonerds.
John Doe · 2023-06-16 12:58
>>10380 Look into animecore communities. Shut in teens love that soykaf, and they drag Lain into it and soykaf up the already-small-as-is Lain fandom. If you aren't gatekeeping your interests you're a part of the problem.

Thanks to whoever made this post, you inspired me to do my own thing with kinda the same objective. I didn't do a zine ( writing isn't one of my strengths ) but I instead made a treasure hunt with easy ctf-like steps. I think it is easier to pick people's interest with something interactive than with a bunch of text, even more when trying to recuit, but in truth I don't know. I bought a soykaf ton of USBs, put the intro into them as well as the first challenge in them and droped them at my old uni with a sign saying "pick me". I dont really know if it someone got one but i hope so. Anyway OP hope your project still lives on
