What are Lainchan's recommendations for the ideal Solder Iron? I'm working on a project, but the tip of my iron wore off because I'm an idiot and wasn't properly regulating the temperature or keeping the tip clean. I solder a lot these days, so it makes sense to me to stop buying crap ones from home depot every month and invest in something I can use long-term.
After some research, I found out that some irons have exchangable tips you can buy separately, which is a stark contrast to mine, which come with some oddly shaped replacements I can never actually use and no way to order more when your original tip wears out. Higher end models even have fancy things like temperature regulator dials that I could see really improving the life cycle of the tool. Are there any models or manufacturers in particular you guys recommend? What do you guys use for your soldering needs? Is it time to upgrade, or do you have an iron you've lovingly kept for years and years and grown attached to?

Have a Hakko, it's good. Affordable, heats up quick, can change the tips, plenty of power. Would recommend.
Get good eutectic solder too, I have the Sn 62%, Pb 36%, Ag 2% stuff and it works great.

If you're alright with the shipping time the TS100 is supposedly a nice adaptable soldering iron. Takes replacement tips from one the major brands too, but they're a bit shorter than the ones the manufacturer supplies.

If you're US based, then many people swear by their Hakko FX-888D for 100$. Hakko soykafs on Europe though, poor availability and price.
Weller (but only the kinda blue-greenish ones, the red ones are cheap crap) and Metcal are also reputable brands. There are other reputable brands too, that I can't remember right now.
Just remember to have a proper temperature control and check if the tips are widely available.
And about >>609 it's a nice iron, I got it in post last week, though if you don't need a pocket iron and since you solder a lot these days, then a soldering station is a better choice IMO.
And while price for the iron is okay and don't get me wrong, it's a nice iron and I like it, but if you don't have a power supply on hand (at least 10$ I'd say), a brass wool, and you want some tips (10$ each, not the cheapest around, though I think Hakko T12 tips can also be used) other then the soykafty pencil tip then it can quickly add up.

I'm thinking about buying a TS100 myself since I'm not a heavy user.
