What is your "final project"? What would be your dream thing to build? Your ideal gadget/device maybe? Something you've always wanted to try and make but know it would be too difficult. Use your imagination. Try keep it within the confines of our universe and the laws of physics.

I desire a new form. A finely tuned and finely engineered immortal machine body, simple in design and operation, low in maintenance requirements and as close to 'god' like physical and mental capabilities as possible. Not to mention a virtually unlimited distributed storage for backups of valued information like identity and memory, to ensure continued and durable cybernetic immortality. The body is replaceable so long as the data remains to inhabit it. I work in biomechatronics, so, I act towards realizing this dream daily, though it remains far in the distance. Once this immortality is achieved, I will seek new frontiers. To a new born god, the universe is vast and infinite. Perhaps a interstellar spacecraft is next on the list.

>>269 What 500 gig library? >>314 Step 1 was that they found a large abandoned factory in the city center which they squatted. Step 2: Some countries have laws that if someone squats your land and you have been notified of the squatting, if you do not return to said land withing 1 year of the notice and someone else is still squatting it. Then the land under those and some other conditions becomes public property. That is how you legalise a squat and that is what the guys at my ACC did. Step 3, and they did this in the previous steps as well, they financed themselves by making cultural programs, like concerts, art galleries and even a hacklab. Unless I start with unlimited resources, it'd have to start as a regional service for enthusiasts. Maybe I'd offer discounted service to people who chose to act as nodes on a mesh network If it were to really take off and make a lot of money, I'd get an undersea cable and branch out to Europe. One interesting feature I thought of would be refusal to pass unencrypted traffic and a policy of not attempting to decrypt packets or de-anonymize users. >>717 >Not that I have the funds to attempt this, but would any lainons pay for something like this? Why would I want to use a network with nothing on it? Why would someone want to put stuff on a network with noone on it? Even if you look like established, free (also as in free beer) networks like Tor, they are practically dead. There's very little worthwhile content that's Tor-exclusive. I don't think you could establish something like that with a lot of good content because only people with a certain technical proficiency will see the value of what you're offering and those people are often very restricted in what they can produce.

I'd like to build my own holographic AI one day, like Joi. I already programmed a little personal assistant that keeps track of my tasks and appointments, checks the weather and some other things, but it's just simple software. Too bad real holograms that appear mid-air are really hard to do. Recently some scientists managed to do a single "pixel" by reflecting the light off a dust particle that is moved around, or even kept in place, by a laserbeam. Anything else is inside some kind of box and uses really complicated setups that need a lot of care and/or expensive machinery. Not sure if someone can DIY this anytime soon. For the time being I'll be looking at those "fake" holographic pyramids and screens (like what they use with gatebox.ai for example). At least these are really cheap to make so I ordered a few and might do some RasPi Setup using that. As I really want to use it on a daily basis too it shouldn't be super complex or fragile. Hopefully some day we can have true DIY holograms.

My ultimate project would be a p2p mesh network using low power lasers and soykaf. It would consist of a cheap to create box with 3/4 laser diodes connected up to a micro controller that can relay information. Along with this will be a receiver that can take a specific frequency of light. Each laser can be individually moved and positioned to a peer's reciever. It would use pulses of laser light to transmit data. The problems I can see with this would be transmitting data over a large distance and making a protocol that wouldn't put too much stress on the lasers (overheat them) and that can still route data from one box to another.

Neo · 2018-02-15 09:56
>>1080 I have very few sources and materials and yes, the networks would crash in snow/fog. I do have an idea on how to prevent crashes at least in snow. I'm thinking something like the byte authentication system we have with existing systems where 3 of the same bytes are sent and then checked to see if they are the same. Tripling up the laser diodes and sending in parallel would speed this up greatly. Fog is a much more difficult thing to tackle without investing in fiber optics (which kinda takes away from the point of using lasers). The idea came from the /g/ternet project that never ended without even making a logo. There are probably other projects similar to mine going around that will be much more successful. This, however, is a proof that data can be transmitted via laser: https://youtu.be/2yxwmSS6wrA

Once lifetime replacement prosthetic lungs, kidneys, livers and digestive organs are developed (they are being worked on) it seems like lifespan could be significantly altered. Just replace failing organ systems as needed, we already have lifetime replacement hearts, such as the bivacor. It is only a matter of time, perhaps relatively little, before we figure out the other bits, and that is assuming gene therapies like bioviva do not come to fruition soon as well. I build brain implants, so I can only see my own little corner, but from where I stand, 20-25 years for prosthetic body design to become a thing does not seem unreasonable, though it may only be available for very wealthy or well insured persons.

Or you can choose to do more things over a longer time with less concern about running out of time to complete them, regardless of the pave you set. Time freedom, is arguably the ultimate kind of freedom.

Would be very complex to make a assembly line that do all of this, so I think the best would be to make some robotic arms that can move around the room using rails in the ceiling like a crane. There are a lot of things that robotic arms should do, including give maintenance support to each other and to the rest of the system. It just came to my mind, but probably it would be a new smarthphone brand centered on a good price-quality ratio AND privacy, with, probably a heavily modded version of android and his kernel in order to make the user completely anonymous (in terms of identity/location/packages of data sent or recieved from the device) AND on top of all that, a new decentralized net that can be accessed only by these phones... In this new "net" (wich will probably be only accesible trought a new wi fi frequency, let's say for example, 5.2Ghz? Via new wifi recievers only installed in these phones) , every user would be anonymous (in the ways listed above), and if the user chooses to connect to the regular internet, the "new net" would act as a pass-trought point that will constantly shuffle the user's ip address between the nodes of the "new net" (vpn) in order to give the best anonimicy on the regular internet. So, this "new net" based on anonimicy and only accessible trought these devices via a new wifi reciever with a modifyed frequency, will act also as a vpn in order to protect the user in the regular internet, too.

>>717 I've had this exact thought at one point, including refusal to pass unencrypted packets and a mesh component, which would be good in a lot of different environments. I detest apartments, but at least a mesh network full of people densely packed like that could be significantly cheaper. Unencrypted protocols could also still survive if the network would allow VPNs, which if your goal as the network service provider is to sidestep the issue of being responsible for snooping on all your customers would make sense. As others have pointed out, the network effect would make it hard to get a new network with a clean slate started since the value of a network is ultimately what resources you can access using it. Maybe something like this could evolve out of a more traditional small ISP, though! Provide a discounted subscription fee to users who agree to not allow any unencrypted packets to hit their modem. It'd certainly be a more ethical thing to incentivize people to do than the vendor lock-in certain telecom companies are trying to implement right now. >>724 >>810 YikYak was a centralized version of this concept, has anyone heard of that? >>717 Legally, you can create a WISP meshnet with equipment that doesn't violate any rules but can work like a private ISP (e.g, Ubiquity equipment). A mesh network is quite doable but you would definitely face the same problems the Internet faces which is DDoS and a lot of malicious actors everywhere. Your mesh network would be put to smithereens with just one script kiddie (regardless of encryption they can mess with packet ordering causing general delays and retransmissions unless you plan to use udp+multimedia datagram/streams and have plenty of other methods but I guess it's easier to increase the throughput with nonsense noise data to overwhelm such tools). It's not about the funds or infrastructure but rather the need of a newer design that ensures there aren't malicious actors ruining your network easily. Think of it as simple as people with megaphones, some malicious anon could run a noise generator or a large speaker and your communication transmission/reception loses quality, or even the fact that the feds can pay actors or diy malicious activities using the same megaphones to seize the entire network "because some corpo decided to commodify the same free network and paid the feds to do so" or if it's a dystopian regime they can just crack it down so think of ways to make this as easy to replicate, deploy, remotely deploy maybe auto-negotiating hardware works too. >intercontinental network That's another problem.

I want to create a distributed system of PRIVATE computation with arguably stronger (and objectively cheaper) security properties than mere blockchain-style PoW (or worse, PoS) consensus. I want to create systems where computation can be allocated towards tasks without trusting the host- even when operating on secrets like cryptographic keys. With this technology, anyone who can anonymously robustly automate a patient sliver of digital sidehustle can carve out a nigh-uncensorable legacy for themselves with a long (possibly infinite) shelf-life. Imagine creating an AI that earns money and donates a fortune of crypto to a (random? carefully scouted? hereditary?) someone out of the blue every hundred years after your death. This is the "ultimate DIY" because I would be revising it for as long as I live a lucid life. It would be a deadhand switch, a post-legal cryptographic will to boundless inheritance. Not in earth, but in heaven. I think I have a path to making this a reality, if anyone wants to guess I might stumble across this thread sometime to play hot-n-cold or reconsider my approach.

I think these types of networks that are based on human movements to route data are called "Opportunistic Networks" >>9674 >I want to create systems where computation can be allocated towards tasks without trusting the host The problem of verifying that a remote host is actually running the software you're expecting it to be running is called remote attestation. There has been a lot of research on this topic, even though it's mostly so that companies can ~~verify you're not pirating software~~ uhh I meant checking that you don't have viruses, One way of doing remote attestation is through Trusted Execution Environments (TEE). The short version is that they're tiny computers inside CPUs that only run verified software, so you have some software on the remote host you can rely not to have changed. TEEs are very locked down systems though, they don't allow anyone to develop software on it.

I have quite a few projects I would love to work on during the course of my life. I have this fantasy / mecha space oprah I have always dreamed of making a comic for, id love for a story Id made to be in a *physical* book. Along with that, Id love to make my own server infrustructure in my home, and to extend off that, Id want to make a tony-stark like workshop. Using 3d printers and a pair of sleek AR glasses, Id wanna make a workflow reminisant of science fiction films. Id also interior decorate the fuarrrk outta it so its just as sleek and nerdy as I would want it to be, a space perfectly crafted to my intrests. I could then use this space to create cool projects, I have had this sorta "flame sword" idea in my head id like to realize, and if I had the resources for it, making a mech would be fuarrrking awesome. I would also want to host my own private LLM to act as a personal Ai and database, to easily keep tract of all the stories and projects id love to make. Id also wanna give it a quirky personality, to make it fun to interact with that plays into banter. Id want to make my own vehicle, or hevily modify one that already exists, Im thinking a sports bike or a mazda miata mx-5 decked out with that cyberpunk asthetic. And finally, fulldive vr setup, or as close to one as I could make would also be really cool, I have always wanted to experince other worlds, and since space travel is reserved for the rich, an immatation will just have to do within my own lifetime. hopefully ill live long enough and prosper enough to make these dreams a reality, im already working twoards the first one tho :3

>>11944 >Wouldn't that entail re-deploying the bit file on the FPGA every time you want to run a new piece of software? stuff could already be loaded from another program but yes. there are fpgas that can be partially reconfigured >And if you wanted to run two programs at the same time you'd have to have a superset of those instructions on your FPGA, right? yes, though instructions could be swapped out to free up space if it could be done fast enough to be worth it

>>11950 Nice - I don't know enough about the process of bitfile loading to comment on how doable that'd be but the concept is cool A problem that I think I can see is how you'd deal with storing program memory - since you're partially reconfiguring partitions on the FPGA on the fly I'm not sure if that's compatible with having a single piece of implemented memory used by multiple programs (because wouldn't it need to remap and do timing checks for that RAM too? And by extension, everything else it's connected to....?) This is all stuff I've never played with - it's cool that you're project is making other people think before it's even started :)

The tinkerer to job transition can be disruptive initially but its not very bad.
