G'DAY LAIN
I am working on a project for school, It deals with waves, which got me thinking, hypothetically speaking mai waifu likes to go 160 kmh (100mhp) in a 60 mph zone. Knowing that there are likely to be police in the area with radar guns, what are some possible DIY solutions to make her car radar resistant and not tagged for speed. Also could a simulated warped mirror coating defeat a laser based speed gun?
the parameters are as follows:
1) EW (electronic warfare) countermeasures like jammers are not allowed, since that would violate broadcasting codes = prison
2) must be feasible, like some type of material or coating i.e. stealth paint or sonar dampening plating on submarines (no hypothetical force fields or whatnot)
pic very related

Even if you built a car from the ground up for low reflection and high deflection, it's still a car going down a road. In the 90s when stealth bombers were being used against Serbia, they were using predictable flight paths and one of them was shot down because of that. I don't think a little foam or paint would do the job, but it would depend on the radar equipment.

you are fuarrrked no matter what. The officer will just notice they can't get a reading on you and then pull you over and get you for obstruction of justice. Also, regard that many speed camera things don't actually use radar anymore.

Your waifu could hypothetically use a device that would detect faint radar waves before they are aimed at her vehicle, so that she could reduce the speed ahead of time.

The best you can really do are the normal radar/speed trap detectors; the doppler speed gun is being hit with the radar range equation (r^4 power falloff) whilst you're only getting the r^2 falloff from the transmitter, so you can detect it and brake well before it's getting a return from your car.

I remember reading somewhere totally not legit like the anarchist cook book that the motion sensors on automatic sliding doors would disrupt a radar gun if you amped it up high enough. Would not affect ladar though, which I think most cops are moving towards. Still, if you've got EW capabilites, why not just EMP the cop when they come on to you? So long as you're driving an older car it should be fine.

Your waifu should modify your license plate with black-white thermocromic paint and add an heater behind the plate itself, then don't stop when the cop hits you with the radar.
This would work for mai waifu, since here cops don't chase you and just shoot a pic at your plate, but maybe your case is different.
For radars there are detectors for like 20 bucks, but you can't use those in cities since automatic opening doors from stores would set them off.
For laser guns go shiny and chrome.

remember, detector dectectors and detector detector detectors have all been invented before

what is this magical substance that you speak of and how can i acquire it? (can i make active cammo out of it?)

Just search for "thermochromic pigment" on eBay, it's pretty common stuff. Specified by transition temperature.
I suppose, but the trick with active camo is having it be correct dependent on the perspective of the viewer, which will forever be the tricky bit. Plus it's only going to work in optical, you'll be lit up like a christmas tree in thermal.

I thought about this issue a couple times, and I could offer some potential ideas. Possible you could cover your car in RAM (Radar Absorbing Material) which is basically just iron powder and a bonding agent, however >>209 is still a possibility.
Another idea is creating a war driving rig that picks up LE WAN activity in a given area. I'd imaging that their toughbooks are pretty chatty.
I've never tested any of these though...

would it be possible to pattern pigment like a chameleon and have different colours with different heats that can be manually activated by a heater? or would the outside sunlight on the vehicle/ engine make this improbable?
ATAC cammo functions on using microdots to create disorienting patterns, if you can blend enough, you might not even need to have any high tech gear to be virtually invisible, right?
Unspecified · 2017-07-04 08:18
Yeah, figured that's what you were trying to do. Like a "thermochromic display". They've got fairly high transition temperatures, so I don't think sunlight would be a problem in cool environments at least.
The issue is changing/active camo doesn't really give you that much of an advantage in stealthy stuff; I was taught the "Seven Ss", that in regards to remaining hidden you should be aware of
>Shape (outline)
>Shine (texture)
>Shadow
>Spacing (this is just for moving in a group)
>Silhouette (covers skylining)
>Sudden movement
>Sound
As you can see, visual camouflage only works for two of these -- it breaks your outline up (shape), reducing the humanoid features that the human brain is very good at picking out, and as a matt material means you don't shine. Remaining hidden is a lot more about behaviour and movement than patterns.

At least you won't be a fuarrrking chirstmas tree on thermals, and the reaction time is ages faster than thermochromic.
And if you get caught you can cover yourself in goatse pics.

Don't the toughbooks usually used (CF-30/CF-31 and other models) usually run data off of 3g connectivity? I would imagine they use 4g now, but I guess it would make sense to use a mobile hotspot, (encrypted with WEP best encryption)

I've had an idea similar to what your saying but paint that goes black when cold and white when hot so that you can help have more efficiency in heating/cooling in summer/winter.

There is a product like that called laserveil, or I believe that is what it's called.
For OP's purpose of a 'project for school (which) deals with waves', he/she/it could do a study on IR beams, and a study on wavelength/frequency vs. incident material...
