Building A Trailer: Motorcycle Swingarm Edition

Lunch · 2018-01-31 15:55
Hello deltaboard, I want to build a trailer like in pic related except with only one wheel at the back and two little pegs at the front for when it's unhitched so that it still stands upright. I want it to carry incinerators or composting equipment (for soil management) or perhaps a tiny little house on wheels. Rather than fabricate a swingarm I was wondering are there any modern affordable spares for a japanese bike, like a Honda Benly or a Suzuki Bandit? Please recommend me a swingarm that can be found in the spares bin so that I can build a ghetto trailer.

Any of the modern 125s (Honda CG/CBF, Yamaha YBR) or Chinese duplicates thereof (Jianshe, Sym, Lifan) should provide pretty cheap donor parts. Larger bikes have pretty cheap parts (SV650, CB500/GS500/ER5N) too.

Why only one wheel?

>>1015 >>1024 Suzuki GS swingarm seems to yield a lot of results, but I doubt if the GS series offers parts commonality throughout the range. One wheel would be cheaper. Premium rubber that can do 30+mph is expensive (not that I'd suggest doing so except in emergencies). So would be buying two swingarms and four shocks. The problem though is the hit you take with stability. Suppose the hitched end is a little insecure and it twists a little. Momentum and decent weight distribution centering the trailer is the only thing that will straighten it out. Also going around sharp corners could scrape the wide bed of the trailer on the road. I can either stick the mono-wheel on the end of the trailer where it'll be exposed to UV and theft, or I can tuck it in a third of the way from the back and make it harder to clean, change, or inspect for damages. Also I might need to make room for it under the trailer bed. Do you think it could be made tight enough to carry heavy stuff? Things like full oil drums or sand bags?

>>1025 a "hit" is a little underestimating the MASSIVE instability. A 90° turn will make the whole thing go upside down. Hell, I'd put extra emergency wheels under the trailer just to feel a little safe.

>>1026 >I'd put extra emergency wheels under the trailer just to feel a little safe If I don't need to suspend them or use premium rubber then I might just do that. I could have two old bicycle wheel stabilisers and then the main wheel in the middle. This will surely help emergency braking at 50+mph
